MJ Collins flashing early potential to be a leading scorer for Aggies | Sports

When Jerrod Calhoun and his coaching staff brought in senior guard MJ Collins to the Utah State roster, they expected to see production from the former Vanderbilt and Virginia Tech wing. That might have been a surprising thing to expect given Collins’ career stat line featuring per-game averages of 6.3 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.6 assists. Furthermore, his career field goal percentage through his first three seasons of collegiate ball sat at a rather unencouraging 37.0%. But in the brief glance at Collins’ potential at Utah State, one might already be able to see the makings of an All-Mountain West guard if the positives already displayed continue through March. Collins has played three games in an Aggie uniform, two of those unofficial exhibition contests and the third being against a Division II opponent. That alone is enough to keep a hand hovering over the brakes of the MJ Collins hype train. Even with that caution, it’s hard to not have the other hand planted on the throttle and ready to go full speed ahead on the Mountain West Player of the Year campaign. In these three, partially unofficial, games, Collins has produced per-30-minute averages of 22.0 points, 3.6 rebounds and

Clayton Keller’s overtime goal gives Mammoth 2-1 win over Sabres | Sports

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Clayton Keller scored 47 seconds into overtime to lift the Utah Mammoth to a 2-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday night. Keller wheeled through the Sabres zone and drove to the net where he slipped a shot past Alex Lyon that helped the Mammoth snap a two-game losing skid. Nick Schmaltz also scored, and Karel Vejmelka made 17 saves for Utah and added an assist on the winning goal. Noah Ostlund scored and Lyon made 33 saves for Buffalo. The Sabres have one win in their last five games, which each went to overtime or shootout, and have points in seven straight. Schmaltz’s goal at 3:58 of the third period opened the scoring. His wrist shot from right circle got through Lyon for his eighth goal of the season. Ostlund’s first NHL goal tied the game at 7:50 of the third when he batted home a puck that caromed off the glass and was knocked out of the air to the front of the net by Isak Rosen. This was the first matchup between the two teams since the June 26 trade that sent winger JJ Peterka to Utah for forward Josh Doan and
