Guentzel scores in the 3rd period as the Lightning beat the Mammoth 4-2 for their 5th straight win | Sports

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Jake Guentzel snapped a tie in the third period, and the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Utah Mammoth 4-2 on Sunday for their fifth consecutive win. Yanni Gourde, Anthony Cirelli, and Brandon Hagel also scored for Tampa Bay, and Jonas Johansson stopped 25 shots. It was Cirelli’s team-high seventh goal this season. Lawson Crouse and Kailer Yamamoto scored for Utah, which dropped a home game for the first time this season after opening with four straight wins in Salt Lake City. Ian Cole had two assists, and Karel Vejmelka made 22 saves. Utah had scored at least three goals in eight straight games. The Mammoth jumped in front 5:55 into the first when Crouse snapped the puck home on a breakaway. Tampa Bay responded with 4:43 left in the period. Gourde finished off a series of precision passes with an easy tap-in after drawing Vejmelka out of position. Cirelli made it 2-1 at 2:47 of the second, beating Vejmelka from just outside the face-off circle. Kon Knueppel’s career-high 24 points helps Hornets to a 126-103 rout of Jazz | Sports

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Miles Bridges scored 29 points, Kon Knueppel added a career-high 24 and the Charlotte Hornets routed the Utah Jazz 126-103 on Sunday night to snap a three-game losing streak. High-energy backup center Moussa Diabate provided a huge spark for the Hornets with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Sion James, Knueppel’s college teammate at Duke, also had a career-high 15 points. Collin Sexton added 10 points and 12 assists for the Hornets, who played without Brandon Miller (shoulder subluxation) and LaMelo Ball (ankle impingement). Lauri Markkanen had 29 points and Keyonte George added 25 for the Jazz, who lost their third straight. After opening the season shooting a blistering 53% (16 of 30) from beyond the 3-point arc, Knueppel cooled off significantly the previous two games making just 2 of 12 from deep. But the No. 4 overall pick was again on his game, making 4 of 9 3s as the Hornets made 18 3-pointers. Utah State soccer defeats New Mexico in Mountain West Tournament Quarterfinals | Sports

BOISE, Idaho — Utah State soccer (9-6-5, 5-2-3 MW) took down New Mexico in the Mountain West Championship quarterfinal round Sunday afternoon at the Boas Soccer Complex in Boise, winning 1-0. With the win, the Aggies will now advance to the semifinals to face Air Force on Wednesday.  In a game which featured just four combined shots on goal between the sides, the lone goal came in transition, when a takeaway turned into a counter opportunity and a 71st minute goal for the Aggies. Freshman forward Kunie Hirai took possession in the Lobos’ side of the field, then got out running. Hirai, a Boise native playing in her hometown, then outran three New Mexico defenders before delivering a left-footer into the bottom right corner of the net to make it a 1-0 game.   Defensively, USU limited New Mexico to just eight shots with two on frame to earn the shutout.
