McDavid helps Oilers cool off hot Mammoth with 6-3 win | Sports

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Connor McDavid had a pair of goals and Evan Bouchard added three assists as the Edmonton Oilers exploded for five second-period goals to get past the sizzling Utah Mammoth 6-3 on Tuesday night. Leon Draisaitl and Mattias Ekholm each had a goal and an assist, while Isaac Howard and Ty Emberson also scored for the Oilers (5-4-2), ending a two-game losing skid. Logan Cooley, JJ Peterka and Barrett Hayton scored for the Mammoth (8-3-0), who saw an impressive seven-game winning streak halted. Stuart Skinner registered 20 saves to collect the win for the Oilers, while Karel Vejmelka made 21 stops for the Mammoth. It was Cooley’s league-leading fourth game-opening goal of the year and he became the first player in league history to score each of his first eight goals of the season in the first period. Although their winning streak ended Tuesday, Utah’s eight wins in October mark the first time in franchise history (including previous incarnations in Winnipeg and Arizona) that the team has ever recorded eight wins in a calendar month. Up next Mammoth: Host the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday night. Oilers: Host the New York Rangers on Thursday night. AP NHL:

Markkanen made all 17 free throws and topped his previous best of 49 points set on Jan. 5, 2023. It was the most by a Utah player in the regular season since Malone had 56 against Golden State on April 7, 1998. Monday Cooldown — Utah State has “gotta make plays” to avoid disappointing final stretch | Sports

Sitting in front of a camera for a zoom press conference after Utah State’s 19-point loss to New Mexico Saturday afternoon, Aggies running back Miles Davis had his head in his hands, trying to explain what went wrong. “We just got to make plays,” Davis said. “Every position got to make plays. We all got to do our 11th.” He repeated the line amid other questions, even noting he felt like he sounded like a broken record. But there isn’t really a better way to put it. Utah State has “got to make plays” where right now, they’ve struggled to do so in recent outings. The Aggies have lost three of their last four games, an exact flip of the 3-1 start they began the season on. The reasons for Utah State’s sudden case of the L’s are not new. They’ve been present in every game (with a small exception being the McNeese game, but they’ve been there in all FBS matchups). The difference in the wins is that problems were either masked or simply overcome by great performances in other aspects (Bryson Barnes is responsible for a lot of the latter).  While there are plenty of things that could
