Utah State women’s basketball made two additions this week, one player and one coach. The former is international signee, Saskia Krüger who played in Germany last year. The latter is Quim Gomez, a native of Spain who joins the USU coaching staff after two seasons at Western Michigan.
Krüger played last season at the second level of pro basketball in Germany, the German 2 Bundesliga. She appeared in 18 games for ASC Theresianum Mainz and averaged 6.9 points, 5.8 rebounds. She recorded four double-digit scoring games and two double-digit rebounding outings. Prior to playing for ASC Theresianum Mainz, she attended Baobob College in Lusaka, Zambia. Krüger was the youngest-ever player to compete in the Zambian national league and was a two-time MVP in nationals.
“Saskia gives us a post player who perfectly fits our style of play with her ability to play inside out,” USU head coach Wes Brooks said. “She embraces the physicality that is needed to play the position. She has good hands, as well as good footwork. She runs the floor well and can step outside to hit the 3 and can attack from the perimeter. Saskia is a good post defender who will continue to grow and develop in our system.”
Gomez joins Brooks’ staff as a crucial piece for international recruiting efforts along with player development.
“We are very excited to have Quim join our staff,” Brooks said. “He is an excellent player development coach and will play an integral part in our international recruiting philosophy. Quim has worked over 20 years at the grassroots level in Spain. He is highly respected and well known in Spain.”
“I’m excited to join a program designed for growth, led by Coach Brooks, whose genuine vision for the game and commitment to developing global talent truly stand out,” Gomez said. “We are going to work hard and have fun.”
Gomez helped develop three All-MAC athletes while at Western Michigan along with two All-Defensive selections. Prior to his time at WMU, Gomez was a general manager, sports director and coach at the Spanish club Sabadell BQ Valles.
