Bane scores 21 and Grizzlies use dominant second half to dispatch Jazz, 140-103 | Sports

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Desmond Bane scored 21 points, Jaren Jackson had 19 and the Memphis Grizzlies, playing without Ja Morant, used a dominant second half for a 140-103 win over the Utah Jazz on Tuesday night. After getting hit in the face, Jackson left the court and went to the locker room with 7:39 left in the third quarter but returned to the bench late in the game. He wasn’t needed as the Grizzlies outscored the Jazz 76-38 in the second half for their second win in their last six games. The Grizzlies have floundered since residing near the top of the standings earlier in the season. Once injuries hit, especially Morant’s aliments (currently a hamstring strain), Memphis has dropped out of most championship contender conversations. Isaiah Collier scored 21 for the Jazz, who have dropped 13 of 14. Utah’s top scorers John Collins (ankle), Lauri Markkanen (ill) and Jordan Clarkson (foot) all sat out. The Jazz were hot from beyond the arc in the first half, hitting 13 of their first 19 attempts. Trailing 61-47, the Grizzlies forced five straight missed 3s and Jaylen Wells capped 17-2 run that gave Memphis a 64-63 lead just before halftime.

Jerrod Calhoun to remain at Utah State, sign new contract with raise per reports | Sports

LOGAN — According to reports from CBS and The Field of 68, Utah State men’s basketball head coach Jerrod Calhoun will remain with the Aggies and will sign a new contract that will make Calhoun the second-highest paid coach in the Mountain West. The new deal with USU comes after Calhoun reportedly interviewed with West Virginia for its coaching vacancy and being the reported front-runner for the job. This past season, Calhoun led the Aggies to a 26-8 record, a third-place finish in the Mountain West (after being predicted sixth in the preseason poll) and to their third straight 26-win season and a third consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament. That wound up making Calhoun a possible target for high-major schools with bigger budgets, namely West Virginia, a program with which Calhoun has significant ties. He spent six years with West Virginia as an assistant coach under its long-time head coach Bob Huggins. The Mountaineers made runs to the Sweet 16 and Final Four while Calhoun was an assistant and this year he has repeatedly referenced those successes as valuable experiences that have helped him as a head coach with Utah State. Online rumors raged late last week and into

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Alex Lyon made 16 saves in relief of injured starter Petr Mrazek, powering the Detroit Red Wings to a 5-1 victory over the Utah Hockey Club on Monday night. Lyon took over at goalie after Mrazek exited just 1:38 into the game with an apparent lower body injury. Dylan Guenther collided with Mrazek in the net at the tail end of a breakaway shot attempt. Mrazek limped off the ice after the play and went straight to the locker room. Elmer Soderblom, Marco Kasper, Austin Watson, Alex DeBrincat and Tyler Motte all scored to help Detroit snap a six-game skid away from home. Guenther reached 100 career points, scoring his 26th goal of the season for Utah. Karel Vejmelka made nine stops in his career-high 14th straight start. Utah took a 1-0 lead at the 3:46 of the first on Guenther’s power-play goal. Soderblom equalized on a slap shot just 82 seconds later. A fortunate bounce put the Red Wings ahead at the 1:34 mark of the second. Kasper snapped the puck toward Lawson Crouse and it careened off his leg and into the net.
