Utah Hockey Club narrows the choice of a permanent name to three finalists. It won’t be the Yeti | Sports

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Utah Hockey Club has chosen three finalists for the permanent team name it will adopt beginning with the 2025-26 NHL season. The franchise will use a final round of fan voting to decide among the Utah Mammoth, Utah Hockey Club and Utah Wasatch. Team officials backed away from including Yeti as a finalist after being unable to work out a co-existence agreement with Yeti Coolers to use the name in branding and merchandising. “They have a unique trademark that allows them to prevent the use of the word Yeti or Yetis,” Smith Entertainment Group executive Mike Maughan said. “They made a determination for the sake of their brand that they didn’t want to enter into a coexistence.” The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office earlier this month refused a request by the club, citing a “likelihood of confusion” with other notable brands using the name, such as Yeti Coolers. An email sent Wednesday by The Associated Press to Yeti Coolers LLC seeking comment was not immediately returned. Fans in attendance at the next four home games, starting Wednesday night against Pittsburgh, will vote at designated iPad stations at the Delta Center to help decide the

Commissioner doubles down on Mountain West’s commitment to remain viable after 5 teams leave in 2026 | Sports

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez issued a statement Wednesday reiterating the conference’s commitment to remaining viable when five members leave for a rebuilt Pac-12 next year. “A good deal of speculation has recently been offered by various media outlets regarding the current and future status of the Mountain West, and other collegiate athletic conferences,” Nevarez said. “While I cannot and will not comment on other leagues, I can share some facts about the Mountain West.” Air Force, Nevada, New Mexico, San Jose State, UNLV, Wyoming and Hawaii have executed a grant of rights agreement that binds the schools together through the conference via television rights from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2032. Those seven schools also are “successfully executing a future membership strategy” that will ensure the stability of the Mountain West through June 30, 2026, and beyond, Nevarez said, and pursuing a media rights agreement that would begin July 1, 2026. Hawaii will become a member in all sports starting in 2026-27 after having been a football-only member. Also in 2026, UTEP joins as a full member and Northern Illinois as a football-only member. UC Davis and Grand Canyon are joining in some

Mountain West Watch — Midseason power rankings, grades, awards ladder for men’s basketball | Sports

We’re crossing the midway point of Mountain West play, with each of the teams having played, or will have played, 10 of the eventual 20 games of the conference schedule by the end of the day. That means it’s time to check in on the conference as a whole and have some fun grading the teams for their performance so far. These grades won’t be completely isolated to exclusively what the teams have done in conference play, but the recency bias of those MW games will have a significant impact. Several teams are getting sub-par grades for poor performances in conference games after a solid non-conference slate. And, just to add a little more content to this, we’ll order the teams in my own power rankings of the conference. Power Rankings and team grade 1. Utah State (A+) The Aggies have become a bit of a media darling among the mid-major loving outlets for a second straight year. This year has a different flavor since it’s gone from “How did Danny Sprinkle return zero points from last year’s team and build a contender?” to “How do the Aggies keep doing this with new coaches every year?” As much as this
