Utah State gymnastics scores 196.000 to finish third at Best of Utah meet | Sports



WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah – Utah State’s gymnastics team delivered its best performance of the season at the Les Olson IT Best of Utah Meet held here at the Maverik Center on Monday with a season-high 196.000. That score is its best-ever in the sixth-annual meet featuring the four in-state programs.

 

No. 4 Utah won the quad meet with 197.950, followed by Southern Utah (196.150), USU (196.000) and BYU (195.750).

 

Utah State, which scored season-highs on all four events, began the meet on the floor and scored 49.000. USU followed with 49.000 on vault, 48.950 on bars and 49.050 on beam.

 

Sophomore Nyla Morabito was the lone Aggie to claim an event title as she tied for first on floor with a career-high-tying 9.925.

 

Freshman Olivia Orengo was named the Utah State Gymnast of the Meet as she scored 9.850 on floor, 9.850 on bars, and 9.800 on beam, all of which are season highs.

 

Graduate Brianna Brooks competed in the all-around for the first time this year and scored 39.100 to place fifth. Brooks scored a 9.675 on floor, a season-high-tying 9.775 on vault, 9.825 on bars and a season-high 9.825 on beam.

“I’m really excited for our team today. The goal was to have joy and put four events together and they did just that. I’m proud of every individual effort and I’m proud of the Aggies.

 

“Olivia Orengo had a great night on three events. Nya Morabito crushed it on the two events that she is doing for us. And Avery Bibbey put up a great bar score. Her energy really helped finish that rotation for us.

 

“I’m proud of our vault and floor lineups. They have put a lot of hard work in the last two weeks, and you can tell that it is starting to come together.”

 

Rotation One – Floor (49.000)

Utah State opened the meet with a season-high 49.000 on floor. Morabito led the Aggies as she tied her career-high with a 9.925 to tie for first on the event. Orengo and fellow freshman Kaylie Medrano also scored season-highs with 9.850 and 9.825, respectively.

Rotation Two – Vault (49.000)

Utah State moved to vault for its second rotation and posted a season-high 49.000. Morabito led the Aggies with a season-high 9.850 to tie for third. Freshman Lundyn VanderToolen also scored a season-high with a 9.800, while Medrano tied her season-high with 9.800. Brooks and senior Payton Gatzlaff scored identical 9.775s as that score for Gatzlaff was a season high, while Brooks’ score tied her season high. Sophomore Mya Witte finished the rotation for USU with a 9.725 in her first-ever vault routine.

Rotation Three – Bars (48.950)

The high scores kept coming for Utah State on bars with a season-high 48.950. Avery Bibbey highlighted the rotation for the Aggies as the junior tied her career-high with 9.900 to tie for second on the event. Orengo added a season-best 9.850, while Brooks scored a 9.825.

Rotation Four – Beam (49.050)

Utah State finished the competition with a season-high 49.050 on beam. Sophomore Sydney Jelen paced the Aggies with a career-high-tying 9.875, while Brooks scored a season-high 9.825. Orengo and Medrano also tied their season-highs on the event with a pair of 9.800s and graduate Jenna Eagles scored a season-best 9.750.
