Utah State rolls against Utah Tech, advances to program-best 9-0 start | Sports

Utah State needed an offensive refresher after four straight games where the scoring hadn’t been as plentiful as earlier games in the season. The Aggies got just that in a 92-62 home win over Utah Tech on Saturday. The offensive showcase hearkened back to the explosiveness of outings from mid-November, which saw the Aggies score 90 or more points in the first four games of the season. Saturday’s win marked the fifth time overall this season, but had a more refreshing feeling having come after a four-game stretch in which USU’s highest point total was 77. “The last couple of games have been a little bit closer than I think they should have been,” said USU guard Drake Allen. “I think we all know that our offense didn’t flow as well. We weren’t running in transition as much as we should have been. So it was a big emphasis for us this week to get out and run, score a lot of points and it feels nice, always feels nice, to score over 90.” This jump in scoring came despite lower scoring outputs from Ian Martinez (13) and Mason Falslev (12) — though their lower point totals had more to

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Michael Kesselring had a goal and an assist to help Utah beat the sliding Buffalo Sabres 5-2 on Saturday. Nick Schmaltz, Jack McBain, and Kevin Stenlund also scored for Utah. Karel Vejmelka made 23 saves. Kesselring and Mikhail Sergachev scored 24 seconds apart in the second period, lifting Utah to a 2-1 lead. It was Kesselring’s fourth of the season and No. 7 on the year for Sergachev. Rookie Tyson Kozak scored his first NHL goal and Jiri Kulich also scored for the Sabres who are winless in six straight games (0-4-2). Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 23 saves. Buffalo’s six-game winless streak is its longest since it lost eight straight games in November 2022. Takeaways Sabres: A day after general manager Kevyn Adams spoke about how the lack of palm trees and higher taxes in New York made it difficult to convince players to join the Sabres, fans chanted for his firing and booed the team as Utah piled on two more goals in the third period. Utah: For the first time this season, Utah won a game when trailing after the first period (1-4-0). It marked the first time in eight games that it allowed a

Utah State hires Bronco Mendenhall as football coach. | Sports

LOGAN – Following a week of rumors, speculation and even some fans pouring over flight tracker sights, Utah State has announced its next football head coach in Bronco Mendenhall. The news was first reported Thursday evening by ESPN’s Pete Thamel before being officially announced by USU Friday morning.  The hire officially ended the tenure of interim head coach Nate Dreiling and gives the Aggies their first full-time coach since the July firing of Blake Anderson.  “Bronco is one of the most experienced coaches in college football. His leadership, proven record, and deep understanding of the game make him the ideal choice to elevate our program,” said Utah State Athletics Director Diana Sabau in a statement. “Bronco’s success goes far beyond football. He has a profound connection and care for developing young men. His student-athletes are proven leaders, and he has consistently built programs that emphasize character, discipline, and excellence in every aspect of their lives.” Mendenhall, a native of Utah and graduate of American Fork High School has 18 years of head coaching experience at the FBS level. His most notable accomplishments were with BYU where he spent 11 years from 2005 to 2015, going 99-43 and going to a
