John Collins scores on a late dunk to lift Jazz past Mavericks for 1st home victory | Sports

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — John Collins scored the last of his 28 points on a tiebreaking dunk with 6.4 seconds left to give the Utah Jazz their first home victory of the season, 115-113 over the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday night. Collins also had nine rebounds. Jordan Clarkson added 20 points. Luka Doncic had 37 points, seven rebounds and nine assists for Dallas. Quentin Grimes added 15 points and five assists while filling in for Kyrie Irving, who missed the game because of a right shoulder sprain. Klay Thompson had 17 points. The Mavericks erased the double-digit deficit and tied it on Thompson’s 3-pointer in the final minute. Collins answered with his winner. Dallas led at halftime and got six third-quarter baskets from Doncic. It wasn’t enough to keep the Jazz from surging ahead as the quarter progressed. Utah ripped off a 9-0 run following back-to-back baskets from Doncic and went up 90-78 on Collins’ tip-in layup. Takeaways Mavericks: Irving’s absence deprived Dallas of a reliable second scorer and inhibited efforts to keep pace with a red-hot Utah offense. Jazz: Kyle Filipowski is showing signs of evolving into a reliable scorer. The rookie forward is averaging 16.0 points on

Aggies hold off CSU Bakersfield, get first win of season and Brooks era | Sports

LOGAN – It took a few tries, but the youthful squad under new Utah State women’s basketball head coach Wes Brooks found a way to put things together for (most of) a full game and it resulted in the team’s first win Thursday morning, 67-51, over Cal State Bakersfield. Utah State’s first two games were losses in close contests against Kansas City (80-77) and Cal State Northridge (69-65), both games in which USU held fourth-quarter leads. Utah State saw a similar second-half drop-off in performance, seeing a 21-point lead drop to eight as late as 6:16 in the fourth quarter.  The first-half lead was built largely on the back of 17 forced turnovers. Those became 19 points for the Aggies and crippled CSUB’s offense, which managed just 23 after the end of two quarters. Utah State, meanwhile, shot 47.4 percent from the field, having no trouble finishing shots. Not insignificant in that early dominance was the crowd. At least once a year, Utah State has worked with local elementary schools to bring in thousands of children to attend a game. About 3,100 screaming youth injected energy into the Aggies for this game. “Incredible environment,” Brooks said. “I’ll try and get

Aggies trounce Westminster with hot shooting, press defense | Sports

LOGAN – Offense has never been an issue for Utah State so far this season, and that very much continued Wednesday with the Aggies blasting Westminster with a 117-53 domination. It’s tied for the fifth-largest margin of victory in USU history (64 points) and was the most points in a single game since 2019. And combined with the first two games, it marks the first time ever Utah State has scored 100 points in each of its first three games. The only other Aggie teams to have three straight 100-point games at any point in the season were the 1972-73 and 1967-68 teams. No USU team has ever done it four straight games. Utah State began the game by making just two of its first six shot attempts, but would finish the game with a shooting percentage of 63.6 — the highest in a single game since a 2022 win over UNLV — with the Aggies also going 17 of 31 (54.8 percent) from three. They also had 28 assists, the second time this season they’ve done so (in the previous five seasons, USU had one game total with at least 28 assists). “Our coaches do a great job of
