Volleyball flirts with program record in 3-0 sweep of Nevada | Sports

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State volleyball dominated in every phase of the game en route to a 3-0 (25-12, 25-18, 25-12) sweep of Nevada on Tuesday night at the Wayne Estes Center. The Aggies hit .500 (40-5-70) for the match, the team’s first time hitting .500 or better since hitting a program-record .550 against VCU in 1997. Head coach Rob Neilson “That’s as complete of a match as maybe we’ve ever played in my five years here and we’ve had some really good teams that have accomplished really good things. We hit great. We defended them great. We blocked great. We served great. We passed great. I’m just really impressed by how our team is growing. It’s fun to see against a really good, aggressive and competitive Nevada team. I’m really proud of our group and how we got after it.” Set One USU dominated from the opening serve, hitting .700 in the first set and recording three aces. The Aggies used an early 4-0 to open up a quick lead before taking firm control with a 9-3 stretch midway through. Utah State left no room for a comeback, closing the set on a 5-0 run to win, 25-12. Jefferson Diaz scores the decisive goal in a 5-4 shootout as Minnesota beats RSL in MLS playoffs | Sports

SANDY, Utah (AP) — Jefferson Diaz scored the decisive goal in a 5-4 shootout after Minnesota and Real Salt Lake played to a scoreless draw in regulation, and United beat RSL in the first game of a best-of-three series on Tuesday night. It marked Minnesota’s first MLS Cup playoff win via a penalty kick shootout in club history. United can clinch a spot in the Western Conference semifinals with another victory over RSL on Saturday. Diaz sent RSL goalkeeper Zac MacMath the wrong way in the sixth round and then Braian Ojeda had a shot deflect off the crossbar. Minnesota goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair secured his eighth clean sheet of the season. MacMath dove to his left to deny Minnesota defender Michael Boxall in the third round of penalty kicks, but RSL defender Justen Glad followed with a shot that sailed the crossbar to keep it even at 2. MacMath guessed correctly in the fourth round, but Jeong Sang-Bin’s shot went under him into the back of the net. RSL’s last home playoff loss occurred in 2019 against Seattle. Reeling Jazz try to move on after Hendricks’ gruesome injury | Sports

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Utah Jazz have been emphasizing that this season will be centered on developing their young building blocks like forward Taylor Hendricks, but now he’s likely gone for the season. On Monday night, Hendricks ran down the court toward the baseline, stumbled and awkwardly fell on top of his leg. Without anyone in his vicinity, he broke his right fibula, dislocated his ankle and yelped in disbelief as he saw his foot going one direction and his leg the other. Several Jazz players had tears in their eyes and covered their heads with towels during an extended break where the medical staff took Hendricks off on a stretcher. They lost to the Mavericks 110-102 and now face a rebuilding season without a defensive centerpiece. “A bunch of us were visibly rattled. It was really hard to see,” Utah coach Will Hardy said Tuesday. “Everybody processes those things differently. Everybody needs to pick each other up at different moments.” After the Jazz chose him at No. 9 in the 2023 draft, Hendricks spent about half his rookie campaign in the G League before breaking into the rotation later in the season. In the first three games
