Aggies force 35 turnovers, take 44 threes in win over Westminster in preseason exhibition | Sports

LOGAN – The first glimpse of Utah State women’s basketball under new head coach Wes Brooks — a 94-70 win over Westminster in a Friday exhibition game — showcased the rough edges of his team in year one. It also displayed how the Aggies could find ways to thrive in games that can look ugly on a stat sheet. Utah State and Westminster combined to shoot 36.4 percent from the field, the Aggies making just 18.2 percent of their 3-point attempts and the visiting Griffins making a mere 33.3 percent overall. There were also 41 fouls committed (19 by Westminster, 22 by USU). But where there were self-inflicted problems, the Aggies created problems for their opponent. Most notable the 35 turnovers committed by Westminster, with 18 of those being directly converted to steals by Utah State. That resulted in 40 points off turnovers for the Aggies and 22 fast break points. “I told the girls just now, we play defense, we force (35) turnovers. If we’re gonna do that, it doesn’t matter,” Brooks said. “So we’ll continue to get better. When those threes fall we should get 120 [points].” It took a bit for Utah State to find its groove.

Tanner Cragun hits walk-off field goal as Utah State snaps losing streak with win over Wyoming | Sports

With two seconds left on the game clock in Laramie, Wyoming, the home side Cowboys called timeout hoping to ice Utah State’s kicker, Tanner Cragun. The redshirt freshman was set to line up for a 40-yard field goal with a chance to give the visiting Aggies a walk-off win. Wyoming head coach Jay Sawvell wanted to give Cragun a little more time to get nervous about the stakes. Both sides sat at 1-6 heading into the game, Utah State was on one of the longest active losing streaks at six consecutive defeats. The Aggies trailed 25-24 meaning a miss would end the game and increase that skid to seven games. Cragun said the extra thinking time didn’t affect him. “I’ve never been fazed by icing,” Cragun said. “I know a lot of kickers are that I’ve talked to. But not thinking much (during the timeout). Just calming my body down, taking deep breaths and then just doing what I’ve practiced for so long.” Utah State interim head coach Nate Dreiling took the time to hug a few of the coaches and keep a positive outlook no matter what happened with Cragun’s upcoming kick. “I just told a bunch of coaches

Joel Edmundson scores twice to lead Kings past Utah 3-2 | Sports

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Joel Edmundson scored twice and Brandt Clarke had a goal and an assist, helping the Los Angeles Kings beat Utah 3-2 on Saturday. Signed in free agency to provide more physicality on the blue line, Edmundson showed good offensive skill in his first career multigoal game. He got to the front of the crease to put Anze Kopitar’s pass into an open goal to make it 2-0 in the second period. He sent a shot from the blue line through traffic for a 3-1 lead early in the third. Darcy Kuemper stopped 23 shots for the win. It was his first start in nearly two weeks after missing time because of a lower-body injury. Clayton Keller and Logan Cooley scored for Utah in its third straight loss. Takeaways Utah: Nick Bjugstad made his Utah debut after missing the first eight games of the season with a back injury. Bjugstad had 22 goals and 23 assists last season for Arizona, so the middle-six center should be an important contributor going forward.
