No. 10 Utah State opens league play with 4-0 win at San José State | Sports

SAN JOSE, California – No. 10 Utah State soccer (10-0-1, 1-0-0 MW) opened Mountain West play in dominant fashion Thursday evening at the Spartan Soccer Complex, taking down San José State 4-0.   It took just five minutes for the Aggies to take the lead in this one, capitalizing on a penalty kick after a foul was called inside of the box on the Spartan goalkeeper. Freshman forward/midfielder Austin Miller, who drew the call, sent a perfect shot in near the left post to make it 1-0. Not long after, in the seventh minute, sophomore forward Kate Christian delivered a highlight goal as she sent a shot from 30 yards out beyond the diving fingertips of the keeper.  Just before the half in the 43rd minute, the Aggies extended the lead as a corner from senior midfielder Rine Yonaha found junior midfielder Kaitlyn Richins at the far post, who tapped in the third goal of the night for USU. The final goal of the night came in the 77th minute at the foot of sophomore forward Solena Sellers. A throw-in from sophomore defender Kayla Sato met Sellers near the corner of the 18-yard box, who then chipped a high-arching shot into the

Aggies go five sets again but fall to Colorado State in Mountain West opener | Sports

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State went to five sets for the fifth consecutive match, tying a program record, but ultimately fell short in their Mountain West opener to Colorado State, 3-2 (25-15, 22-25, 25-18, 25-27, 15-12), on Thursday night at the Wayne Estes Center. Set One Colorado State, picked in the preseason to win the MW, proved why in the beginning, opening the match with a 5-1 run. The Aggies fought back to one-point deficits on multiple occasions before the Rams responded with a 7-1 to take firm control of the set en route to a 25-15 win. Set Two In the second frame, it was the Aggies who took early control, using a 5-1 run to take the lead before a 5-0 USU run pushed the Aggies out to a 12-6 lead. CSU slowly crept back into the mix, eventually retaking the lead after a 6-1 burst. In the final stages, however, a trio of kills from junior Tierney Barlow and freshmen Loryn Helgesen and Andrea Simovski spurred USU on a 4-0 run to catapult back in front for a 25-22 win to tie the match at one set apiece. Set Three The Rams pounced early again in set three

Utah Jazz pick up 5th-year option on coach Will Hardy’s contract | Sports

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Utah Jazz picked up the fifth-year option on coach Will Hardy’s contract on Friday. Hardy originally signed a four-year deal with the Jazz in 2022 that included a team option for a fifth season. The move will keep the 36-year-old coach with Utah through the 2026-27 season. Entering his third season with the Jazz, Hardy has a 68-96 record with no postseason appearances. “We love Will,” Jazz CEO Danny Ainge said. “We love the direction he is (going). We love the teammate he is. He’s really excited this year to have a chance to develop these young players. We’re excited he’s a part of us.” Utah traded away all-stars Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell before Hardy coached his first game. The team has undertaken an extensive rebuilding process during his tenure. Hardy figures to be an important part of that process. The move to secure him for an additional season comes on the heels of restructuring and extending all-star forward Lauri Markkanen’s contract a month earlier. Markkanen agreed to a $238 million deal over five seasons in August to stay in Utah. Before coming to the Jazz, Hardy had stops as an assistant coach
