It confirmed the Aggies will join Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State and San Diego State in moving from the Mountain West to join the remnants of the old Pac-12, Oregon State and Washington State. “Joining the Pac-12 Conference exemplifies our commitment to elevating USU academics and athletics,” USU Director of Athletics Diana Sabau said. “This will position all our teams in a multi-bid league for the NCAA postseason and championships. This is an incredible opportunity for our student-athletes, as well as our alumni, investors, the HURD and our Logan and Cache Valley communities and all of Aggie Nation.” “The vision of the Pac-12 Conference firmly aligns with USU’s mission and our commitments to the future,” Utah State University President Elizabeth Cantwell said. “This move unlocks new possibilities by directly enhancing the student-athlete experience and will significantly strengthen our reputation for competitive success, academic achievement, and research excellence.” The move comes in the wake of a historic 2023-24 sports season that saw Utah State win four Mountain West championships, coming in women’s

Utah State collapses against Temple, loses third straight | Utah State

For a second straight week, Utah State had a two-score lead in the second quarter. And for a second straight week, the Aggies were outclassed the rest of the game after building that early lead as they lost 45-29 on the road at Temple. It’s the third straight defeat for USU as it now heads into an early bye week with a 1-3 record and zero wins against FBS teams. “I apologize to Aggie faithful. They deserve way better than what they’re seeing right now,” USU interim head coach Nate Dreiling said after the game. The two-week problem of strong starts and slow finishes is a growing concern. The Aggies had a 14-3 lead over Utah last Saturday and a 14-0 advantage over Temple. And if you count from the points where USU had those respective leads, the Aggies went on to be outscored 80-29 for the remainder of those two contests. “We came out to a good start, we just didn’t finish. And that’s kind of been our story up to this date,” Dreiling said, also adding, “I’ll take full blame for not having this team ready to compete.” The Aggies held Temple to just 27 yards in the

Pac-12 files a federal lawsuit against Mountain West over $43 million in ‘poaching’ penalties | Sports

The Pac-12 is suing the Mountain West over what it calls an unlawful and unenforceable “poaching penalty” that would cost the rebuilding conference more than $40 million for adding Boise State, Fresno State, Colorado State and San Diego State, according to a lawsuit filed Tuesday in federal court. The antitrust complaint was filed in the U.S. District Court of the Northern District of California and is seeking a declaratory judgment by a judge. “The action challenges an anticompetitive and unlawful ‘Poaching Penalty’ that the MWC imposed on the Pac-12 to inhibit competition for member schools in collegiate athletics,” the lawsuit said. The Mountain West did not immediately respond to a request from The Associated Press seeking comment. The Mountain West has exit fees of upward of $17 million for departing schools. Those fees can increase depending on how much advance notice a school provides. There also are poaching fees that were put in place in the Mountain West’s football scheduling agreement with Oregon State and Washington State, the only current Pac-12 members this season. The fee starts at $10 million and increases by an increment of $500,000 for every additional school the Pac-12 adds from the Mountain West. With four

Week 4 Mountain West Watch – Amid chaos, MW takes small step forward on the field (kind of) | Sports

Is it awkward to be writing Mountain West updates when the conference is currently being surgically cut apart by the Pac-12? Yes. Yes it is. But the show must go on even while re-alignment news is constantly breaking and schools are in the motions of stabbing each other in the back over a few million dollars. This week the conference took a bit of a step forward. “A bit” because some teams continued to fall back but some of the teams that slipped up last week were able to regain some ground while the top of the conference remains strong and (mostly) moving up.
