Pac-12 adding Utah State, in talks with Gonzaga, as Mountain West tries to hold UNLV, AP sources say | Sports

EDITOR’S NOTE: This story has been updated as new information became available throughout the day. The Pac-12 is adding Utah State as its seventh member and is in discussions with basketball powerhouse Gonzaga to join the rebuilding conference in 2026, multiple people with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press on Monday. In a whirlwind day of maneuvering by three leagues, Utah State and UNLV of the Mountain West became prime targets for the Pac-12 after a group of American Athletic Conference schools decided to stay put, following a pitch to join the rebuilding Conference of Champions. Utah State, based in Logan, accepted the Pac-12’s invitation, according to two people, but UNLV’s decision was uncertain Monday night as Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez worked to keep the conference’s remaining schools together. The Mountain West received commitments from Air Force and San Jose State earlier in the day, according to two other people with knowledge of that conference’s situation, but it was unclear if anything was binding if the rest of the remaining members were not on board. Air Force had been drawing interest from the AAC to join Army and Navy in that conference. The other Mountain West schools include New Mexico, Wyoming,

Utah State has received and accepted invite to Pac-12 conference per reports | News

LOGAN — Amid the swirling chaos of conference re-alignment, Utah State has, for once, received an invite to be part of a shift upward in a conference instead of being left behind. According to multiple reports, USU is expected to receive an invite to the Pac-12 Monday evening and is also expected to accept that invitation according to reports from numerous outlets. Reports from ESPN, NBC, The Athletic and Yahoo Sports among others on Monday evening confirmed reports earlier in the evening from many of the same sources (Action Network among the early reporters) that indicated USU would receive and accept the invite. This would put the Aggies in the partially rebuilt Pac-12 which, aside from USU, currently consists of Oregon State, Washington State, Boise State, San Diego State, Colorado State and Fresno State. Utah State has agreed to join the new Pac-12, sources tell @YahooSports, becoming the 7th member. League needs one more *full* member to meet NCAA requirements. As for partial members, Pac-12 has held talks with Gonzaga (bball only) & UConn (FB only), sources tell @YahooSports. — Ross Dellenger (@RossDellenger) September 24, 2024 Of course, this invite only came after many of the Pac-12’s top targets in the

Monday Cooldown – Utah State is consistently inconsistent (and kind of bad) | Sports

Yea, there’s not really any sugar-coating left to put on Utah State’s season so far. You can dress up losses, even blowout losses, to top 15 teams as at least minor positives when you see improvement. But all that goes out the window when you lose to a bottom five team in the country. For a second straight week, Utah State had a two-score lead in the second quarter. And for a… To be honest, I had to cut short anything I felt like saying, partly in the spirit of this kind of article. But there’s one thing I did say since it felt emblematic of the last two weeks, games where the Aggies were supposed to show the most improvement after getting plastered 48-0 at USC. In the last two games, Utah State has held leads of 14-3 and 14-0 over Utah and Temple, respectively, with both leads being established fairly early in the second quarter. But add up the scoring in the rest of those two games and you end up with the Aggies being outscored 80-29, or 51 points in what amounts to around five-and-a-half quarters of play. Still, it was worth taking time and a

Pac-12 in talks with basketball powerhouse Gonzaga to join rebuilding league in 2026, AP sources say | Sports

The Pac-12 is in discussions with basketball powerhouse Gonzaga to join the rebuilding conference in 2026, three people with knowledge of the talks told The Associated Press on Monday. The Pac-12 is also targeting Mountain West schools UNLV and Utah State, two of the people said, as it pivots away from a group of American Athletic Conference schools that announced they remain committed to their current league. The people spoke on condition of anonymity because the Pac-12’s strategy is not being made public. Memphis, Tulane, South Florida, UTSA and the American Athletic Conference released a statement that made no mention of the Pac-12, but several people with knowledge of those talks told AP that the rebuilding conference had targeted those schools as potential new members. “While we acknowledge receiving interest in our institutions from other conferences, we firmly believe that it is in our individual and collective best interests to uphold our commitment to each other,” the schools said. “Together, we will continue to modernize the conference, elevate the student-athlete experience, achieve championship-winning successes, and build the future.” The Pac-12 began to restock for a 2026 relaunch two weeks ago by landing Boise State, Fresno State, San Diego State and
