Utah Hockey Club signs Dylan Guenther to an 8-year, $57.14M contract extension | Sports

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Utah Hockey Club signed forward Dylan Guenther to an eight-year extension worth $57.14 million on Friday. Guenther will count just over $7.14 million annually against the salary cap over the term of the contract that runs through the 2032-33 NHL season. The 21-year-old is one of the youngest building blocks for the team that was known until earlier this year as the Arizona Coyotes and is now based in Salt Lake City. “Dylan is elite in every aspect on and off the ice,” Utah general manager Bill Armstrong said. “He is a young, highly skilled forward with a shot that’s evolving into one of the best in the NHL. He’s also a first-class person with a strong determination to be great. We look forward to having Dylan as a core player for this organization for many years to come.” Guenther split last season between Arizona and the American Hockey League’s Tucson Roadrunners. He had 18 goals and 17 assists for 35 points in 45 NHL games with the Coyotes. “There isn’t a better example than Dylan when we talk about the combination of talent and character that we are so excited to build a

Utah State collapses against Temple, loses third straight | Sports

For a second straight week, Utah State had a two-score lead in the second quarter. And for a second straight week, the Aggies were outclassed the rest of the game after building that early lead as they lost 45-29 on the road at Temple. It’s the third straight defeat for USU as it now heads into an early bye week with a 1-3 record and zero wins against FBS teams. “I apologize to Aggie faithful. They deserve way better than what they’re seeing right now,” USU interim head coach Nate Dreiling said after the game. The two-week problem of strong starts and slow finishes is a growing concern. The Aggies had a 14-3 lead over Utah last Saturday and a 14-0 advantage over Temple. And if you count from the points where USU had those respective leads, the Aggies went on to be outscored 80-29 for the remainder of those two contests. “We came out to a good start, we just didn’t finish. And that’s kind of been our story up to this date,” Dreiling said, also adding, “I’ll take full blame for not having this team ready to compete.” The Aggies held Temple to just 27 yards in the

Utah State Football at Temple: Preview, Predictions, How to Watch | Sports

Utah State will hit the road one last time in non-conference play to take on Temple, a former powerhouse of the AAC in the 2010s but has since fallen on hard times with four straight seasons of three or fewer wins. This year isn’t going any better as the Owls have begun the year 0-3 and are a bottom five team in the country according to rankings from ESPN, The Athletic, USA Today and KFORD. Of course, the Aggies aren’t doing a whole lot better as they have the same number of wins against FBS teams as Temple. This will be a game of teams on losing streaks who are entering one of the easiest opponents on their schedule. REPORTS: Utah State potentially a top candidate for Pac-12 | Sports

Utah State may be one of the targets for a rebuilding Pac-12 according to a report from Action Network that built on a brief note from Yahoo Sports from earlier in the week. The Pac-12 made its first expansion move Sept. 12 when it announced the upcoming additions of four Mountain West schools — Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State and San Diego State — and are looking for a minimum of two more additions to reach an NCAA-mandated minimum of eight member institutions to remain a recognized conference. Most reporting rumors thus far have focused on the Pac-12’s interest in adding schools in the AAC, mainly Memphis and Tulane with USF and UTSA also being under consideration. The mutual interest of these teams is in question, however, particularly following a report from ESPN’s Pete Thamel which indicated the exit fee from the AAC would be $27.5 million per school. The exit fee, in addition to an increase in travel costs, could dissuade those four from considering jumping ship, especially with the media deal value for the Pac-12 being uncertain. Per Ross Dellenger, the Pac-12 is pitching to prospective teams a media deal that would be worth between $12-15 million,
