LOGAN — Utah State officially announced a series of hirings and promotions on the football staff, finalizing all coordinator and position coach roles for the upcoming 2024 season, some of which were opened by the departure of head coach Blake Anderson earlier this month.
Three of the moves are new hires, which were previously reported by ESPN. The Aggies will be bringing in Troy Morrell as the new associate head coach and senior offensive analyst, Dave Weimers as senior defensive analyst and Rachel Phillips as chief of staff.
Morrell made his name in the junior college ranks as the head coach of Butler Community College His team won three JuCo titles championships during his tenure which also included two undefeated seasons and an overall record of 154-22. Wiemers has held numerous coaching positions since 1992, including coordinator positions at Saginaw Valley (1994-98), Tarleton State (2007), Pittsburgh State (2008-19) and Emporia State (1999-2000). From 2001-06 he was the head coach at Emporia State, going 35-32 in that tenure. Wiemers was most recently the offensive coordinator at Carthage High School (since 2021).
In addition to these hirings, several current assistant coaches will receive promotions to fill small holes in the staff. Kyle Cefalo, who served as co-offensive coordinator, the second-in-command of the offense to Anderson, will now take on the full title of offensive coordinator and be the full-time play-caller. He will still share the role of OC, however, as offensive line coach Cooper Bassett will serve as co-offensive coordinator. Both Cefalo and Bassett will retain their previous position coach duties with Cefalo overseeing wide receivers and Bassett being over the offensive line.
Anderson’s departure also left a vacancy at the quarterback coach position, a role Anderson held in addition to head coach and offensive coordinator. Hayden Kingston, who was an offensive analyst for the team in 2023 and grad assistant in 2021 and 2022, is being promoted to fill that role.
On defense there is one move. Bobby McMillen, who was brought on as part of Nate Dreiling’s new defensive staff, is being promoted to co-defensive coordinator alongside Dreiling who will remain the play-caller on that side of the ball. McMillen will also continue his previous role as coach of inside linebackers.
