Utah State reportedly hiring pair of assistant coaches | Sports

LOGAN — According to a report from ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Utah State football is hiring two new assistant coaches who will work under interim head coach Nate Dreiling this season. The first is Troy Morrell, who will reportedly be the associate head coach and senior offensive analyst. The second is Dave Wiemers who will reportedly take on the role of senior defensive analyst. Morrell made his name in the junior college ranks as the head coach of Butler Community College — where he played as an offensive lineman in the 1990s — serving in that role from 2000 to 2014. His team won three championships during his tenure (2003, 2007 and 2008) with two undefeated seasons and an overall record of 154-22. Morrell resigned his position in 2014, saying he wanted a change and a departure from the high workload and planned to pursue private business ventures. This will be his first official coaching position since leaving Butler. Wiemers, who played quarterback at Dodge City Community College and Washburn from 1987-1990, has held numerous coaching positions since 1992, including coordinator positions at Saginaw Valley (1994-98), Tarleton State (2007), Pittsburgh State (2008-19) and Emporia State (1999-2000). Top 25 Aggies of 2024 – #22 Teague Andersen | Sports

The Cache Valley Media Group’s Top 25 Aggies of 2024 countdown continues with the No. 22 player, the 6-foot-5, 310 pound sophomore offensive tackle Teague Andersen. Andersen is a native of Utah, coming out of Lehi High School. His older brother, Trey, is also on the Aggies’ roster. After a redshirt year in 2022, Andersen played in 12 of USU’s games in 2023, starting seven as a redshirt freshman. The majority of his snaps were at right tackle, though he did start at center for the Aggies against Nevada on Nov. 11. He played the third-most snaps among offensive lineman on the team, and Pro Football Focus graded Andersen as the best offensive tackle on the team last year. The expectation for Andersen is to once again be the team’s starting right tackle and take a bigger step forward as a sophomore. The Top 25 Aggies is based on a vote from members of Utah State media including Jason Walker, Eric Frandsen, Craig Hislop and Ajay Salvesen. Utah State finishes second in the Mountain West with 191 scholar-athlete honorees | Sports

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State finished the 2023-24 academic year second in the Mountain West with a total of 191 scholar-athlete honors as 1,510 accolades were awarded by the league office on Wednesday. In all, a total of 25 Aggies maintained a perfect 4.0 grade point average during the academic year. The MW Scholar-Athlete Award is one of the highest academic honors bestowed by the conference. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better. Utah State led the MW with 50 scholar-athlete accolades from women’s track & field, 27 from men’s track & field, 23 from women’s cross country, 10 from men’s cross country and six from the men’s basketball team. USU student-athletes were third in the league in gymnastics with 11 scholar-athletes, tied for third in soccer (19), tied for fourth in volleyball (7) and sixth in football (16). Softball (9), women’s basketball (5), women’s tennis (4), golf (3) and men’s tennis (1) rounded out USU’s honors.
