LOGAN — Utah State went 2-0 in its opening week of Mountain West play, including an upset of then-No. 13 Colorado State. Unsurprisingly, two of the Aggies that powered that week have been awarded with weekly honors by the conference. Mason Falselv earned Freshman of the Week while forward Great Osobor took home overall Player of the Week honors.
It’s the first time either have been honored, though they are not the first Aggies to earn weekly awards this year as Ian Martinez was named MW Player of the Week on Dec. 18.
Osobor led the Aggies in scoring for both games. He posted a career-high 32 in the win over Air Force, narrowly missing out on a double-double with nine rebounds and four assists in the game as well. The junior forward followed it up by getting a double-double – 20 points, 14 rebounds – in USU’s win over Colorado State. Osobor also had one of his better weeks at the free throw line in his career. He shot 18-of-24 between the two games, his 10 made free throws against Air Force being his third-highest in his career and his perfect 8-for-8 night against the Rams is the most made free throws Osobor has ever had without a miss in his career.
Falslev scored 18 points in back-to-back games against Air Force and Colorado State, shooting a combined 63.6 percent from the field. He also totaled 10 rebounds, four assists and four steals. USU head coach Danny Sprinkle talked about Falslev’s growth lately and how it’s not always easy to remember the former Sky View guard is still a freshman.
“I have to remind myself all the time, but I tell him, like, it’s my job to get him out of his comfort zone. You can see how how good he’s gonna be and he’s just so aggressive and he’s fast,” Sprinkle said. “He’s doing a really good job of playing off two feet, and it’s been a fight to get him to do that because he’s so fast and just jumps off one foot, but now he’s playing under control and playing fast which, it’s hard for anybody to guard.”
