After missing eight games because of a strained left hamstring, Markkanen scored both inside and on the perimeter and was only slowed by a minutes restriction. In 25 minutes, Markkanen went 7 for 13 from the field, had four 3s and eight rebounds. Talen Horton-Tucker scored 13 of his 15 points for Utah in the fourth quarter, mostly coming in a 16-0 run that bridged the third and fourth quarters. Photo by Clint Allen LOGAN — Following a relatively easy week strength-of-schedule wise, Utah State will take on two tough opponents this week, starting with a road trip to Santa Clara to take on the Broncos. Sprinkle opened up his comments to the media by saying Santa Clara is “probably…the best team we’ve played so far.” And while the consensus of computer and human rankings may not agree, there’s plenty of evidence to suggest the Broncos are not a team to be taken lightly, especially when facing them on the road. Santa Clara began the year 6-0, a run that included wins over Stanford (92 in KenPom) and Oregon (39). Since then, the Broncos are 1-3, but those losses are to Ohio State (28), California (166) and New Mexico (33) which certainly aren’t the worst losses to have one one’s resume. (AP Photo/Lenny Ignelzi) LOGAN, Utah – Utah State University Vice President and Director of Athletics Diana Sabau announced Wednesday that the basketball court inside the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum will be named in honor of former USU men’s basketball head coach Stew Morrill. The ceremony will take place on Saturday, Feb. 10, when the Aggie men host Boise State at 8 p.m. “Stew Morrill is a true Aggie legend and having his name enshrined on our basketball court is the ultimate tribute to his remarkable career,” said Sabau. “In his 17 years at Utah State, he led the program to unprecedented success. There are few individuals who have made a bigger impact on Aggie Athletics than coach Morrill.” Morrill, who was hired as Utah State’s 17th head coach on Aug. 7, 1998, guided the men’s basketball program to 14 straight seasons with at least 21 wins from 2000 to 2013 and 13 straight postseason appearances (NCAA-8, NIT-4, CIT-1) from 2000 to 2012, both
