Falslev’s 23, Aggie defense leads USU to win over Montana State Billings in exhibition – Cache Valley Daily

LOGAN — Danny Sprinkle’s unofficial debut as head coach of the Utah State men’s basketball team, featuring an all-new Aggie lineup, went about as well as one can hope for a team with 13 newcomers and zero returning production from last year’s rotation. A defensive-minded USU squad held Division II Montana State Billings to 37.7 percent shooting (28.6 in the first half) while Mason Falslev and his 23 points, seven rebounds and four assists powered the Aggie offense in a 73-64 win in the Friday evening exhibition game. “For the first time playing in front of the crowd, I was proud of them,” Sprinkle said. Utah State’s effort and intensity on defense, which included forcing 19 turnovers, were a big positive from that game and a big part of what Sprinkle is expecting to bring to this program. The guard line were especially intense, accounting for five of the Aggies’ 12 steals and numerous other deflections leading to turnovers. Darius Brown, Javon Jackson and Falslev were all key in slowing the Yellow Jackets. “That’s been our focus all year,” Falslev said. “Coach Sprinkle is very defensive minded, which is a good thing because defense leads to offense. Our gameplan is

Utah State 2023 Men’s Basketball Position Preview Part 3 — Bigs – Cache Valley Daily

This is the third and final part of a three-part series previewing the three main position groups for Utah State men’s basketball — guards, wings and bigs. The big-men for Utah State are a collective unknown, a contrast to the guards and wings. Those two other position groups are no less full of newcomers, but players like Darius Brown, Josh Uduje, Max Agbonkpolo, Nigel Burris and others have spent a good deal of time on a basketball court in college. Meanwhile, of the four players categorized here as the Aggie bigs, there’s only one player who’s been a key player in a rotation at the Division I level, and none have been a regular starter. Despite that fact, this position group is brimming with potential. You’ve got a top 100 junior college recruit, a reigning sixth man of the year, and a pair of former top 100 high school recruits that have transferred from Pac-12 schools. The lack of consistent playing time and/or starts just means that potential is unharnessed. The first player to go over is the one most likely to see consistent time and the one with the most D1 experience: Great Osobor. The transfer from Montana State,

(AP Photo/Rick Bowmer) SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Paolo Banchero scored 30 points, making the deciding layup with 14 seconds left, in the Orlando Magic’s 115-113 victory over the Utah Jazz on Thursday night. Banchero added nine rebounds and five assists to help the Magic win for the third time in 15 games against Utah. He attacked the paint relentlessly for four quarters. Only one of his nine baskets came from the perimeter, and he made 11 of 15 free throws. “I just wanted to be aggressive and take advantage of the mismatches,” Banchero said. Franz Wagner added 21 points, and Cole Anthony had 18 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists to help the Magic cap a four-game trip with their second road victory. “I think us winning tonight just kinds shows our growth as a team,” Banchero said. “It’s a boost being able to go back home with some momentum.” Attacking the rim consistently paid off for Orlando. The Magic finished with 56 points in the paint and

Departing Pac-12 schools say in court filing they should stay in board of directors until they leave – Cache Valley Daily

Franklin) Ten departing Pac-12 schools claim they should have a say in running the conference until they officially leave in August and Oregon State and Washington State are not entitled to seize control of “hundreds of millions of dollars” of revenue the league will earn in 2023-24. In a filing submitted Thursday in Washington State Superior Court, the Pac-12 and the University of Washington made the case conference bylaws do not allow schools to be removed from the board of directors while still competing in the league. “Granting OSU and WSU unilateral authority over hundreds of millions of dollars in 2023-2024 revenue needed this year to run our athletics programs would harm our universities, including our ability to provide critical resources and opportunities for our student-athletes,” the 10 departing schools said in a statement. Washington State and Oregon State are seeking a preliminary injunction, claiming the departing members relinquished their rights to decide the long-term

Photo by Clint Allen LOGAN, Utah – Utah State volleyball (19-5, 12-1 Mountain West) has won nine-straight matches after sweeping Air Force at home on Thursday night. The victory officially secured the Aggies’ spot in the 2023 Mountain West Volleyball Championships. “It’s been a month since we played a Thursday night match here,” head coach Rob Neilson said. “It’s so great to be back in here. We love the energy. That’s a really good team and really well coached. They work hard and they’re scrappy and they cause some real problems with some of the things they do offensively. That was a really complete match from our team. I’m really proud of our group. We’re finding our level and now it’s can we sustain it and find some consistency with the way we’re playing?” Both Aggie outside hitters logged double-digit kills in the win as senior Tatum Stall had a match-best 14, while graduate senior Shelby Capllonch had 10. Junior setter Beatriz Rodrigues led USU with 21 assists, followed closely by sophomore setter Leah Wilton-LaBoy with 18. Defensively, Capllonch and freshman libero Kambree Rodriguez led the Aggies with nine digs apiece. Senior middle blocker Kelsey Watson
