Horton-Tucker scores 37 points as Jazz top Hornets 119-111 – Cache Valley Daily

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Talen Horton-Tucker scored a season-high 37 points and had 10 assists and nine rebounds as the Utah Jazz defeated the Charlotte Hornets 119-111 on Saturday night for their second straight win. Walker Kessler added 17 points and 16 rebounds and Kelly Olynyk had 17 points for the Jazz, who outrebounded the Hornets 60-43. Lauri Markkanen had 13 points and 13 rebounds. Kelly Oubre Jr. scored 24 points and Terry Rozier added 22 for the Hornets, who had their two-game win streak snapped. The Jazz (33-35) entered the night a half-game behind the New Orleans Pelicans for the 10th spot in the Western Conference. Horton-Tucker has been pressed into the primary ball-handling role of late because of injuries — and responded in a big way against the Hornets (22-47) while dominating the game from the outset. Nearly everything was falling from floaters to mid-range jumpers to 3-pointers for Horton-Tucker, who finished 14 of 24 from the field. His previous season high was 23 points. He had a career-high 40 last season against Golden State. The Jazz never trailed and took a 58-49 lead into halftime after getting 15 points from Horton-Tucker, including a spin move in the

(AP Photo/Steve Marcus) LAS VEGAS – The Aggies run couldn’t last forever. A seven-game winning streak, one that saw Utah State completely reverse its season fortunes and likely pushed the team into an at-large NCAA Tournament bid, ended with a 62-57 defeat Saturday afternoon at the hands of San Diego State. The Aztecs proved they were the better team this season, defeating the Aggies at home, on the road, and on the neutral site of the Thomas & Mack Center. The margin between USU and SDSU isn’t wide, but it’s just big enough to make one side the victor in all three contests. “They’ve got a dynamite team,” USU head coach Ryan Odom said of the Aztecs. “They’re very tough. They’re very deep. They’re very physical. They just have a well-rounded bunch and they keep coming at you.” Utah State put up its best effort of the three games in an attempt to avoid a three-game sweep. After

Utah State rallies with defense to down Boise State, advance to MW title game – Cache Valley Daily

LAS VEGAS – For 32 minutes of Friday’s Mountain West conference tournament semifinal game, Utah State trailed Boise State. Shots weren’t falling as the Aggies started 4-of-12 from the field (1-of-12 from three) and made just 37.5 percent of shots in the first half. The Broncos built a lead as high as nine points as they made 53.8 percent of their first-half shots. Something had to change. And change it did but the first step for the Aggies wasn’t suddenly hitting shots. It began with Utah State stepping things up on defense. The result was a 72-62 win and an appearance in the Mountain West conference tournament championship game. Just 24 hours after lighting up New Mexico from three, with a 12-for-24  clip in the Thursday night win, Utah State suddenly couldn’t hit a 3-pointer to save their lives. Steven Ashworth and Taylor Funk, who just themselves  went 10-for-17 in that previous win, began Friday’s game 0-of-6 from distance and were 4-of-14 on the night. “We weren’t as connected as we needed to be in the that first half,” USU head coach Ryan Odom said. “Boise State had a lot to do with that.” Boise State were able to capitalize
