Luke Sorenson named CVMG Prep Basketball Player of the Week – Cache Valley Daily

LOGAN – Ridgeline Riverhawks boys basketball forward Luke Sorenson topped a crowded group of nominees to win Cache Valley Media Group Prep Basketball Player of the Week – presented by McDonalds – his first time winning the award after multiple previous nominations.

The Riverhawks dominated Green Canyon 69-48 on Region 11’s opening night, led by Sorenson’s 21 points, five rebounds (four of which were offensive rebounds) and three steals. Sorenson was highly efficient from the field, making 7-of-11 field goals and also going a perfect 7-of-7 from the free-throw line. It was Sorenson’s sixth 20-point performances of the year.

This week a record eight players received nominations. The others nominated were Emilee Skinner (Ridgeline girls), Gracie Riley (Bear River girls), Hannah Radford (Sky View girls), Jared Anderson (Green Canyon boys), Jordan Child (Logan boys), Kali Jones (Mountain Crest girls) and Oliver Nethercott (Mountain Crest boys).

Between the eight nominees, who each played one game last week, there were seven 20-point games (the highest was Riley’s 23 points) and three double-doubles.

Candidates for the Player of the Week award were nominated by Cache Valley Media Group staff and then voted on by all high school broadcast crew members, including “Hurricane” John Newbold, Jason Walker, Clint Payne, Dave Simmons, “The Patriot” Nick Zollinger, Jake Ellis, “The Coach” John Olsen, Cade Forest, Terrell Baldwin, Trent Carter, Josh Theurer and Eric Frandsen. Some stats may be unofficial. Also, thanks to the Cache and Box Elder McDonalds locations for sponsoring the POTW award and supporting local high school sports!
