Injured Legas “should be fine” by spring ball – Cache Valley Daily

(AP Photo/Sam Hodde) DALLAS – Utah State had injury added to the insult of a 38-10 loss to Memphis in the First Responder Bowl. With a little over 10 minutes left in the third quarter, starting quarterback Cooper Legas left the game with a leg injury. On the play in question, Legas was sacked for a fourth time in that game, thrown to the ground by Memphis freshman James Stewart. He was tended to by trainers for a couple minutes before being helped off the field. As he left the field Legas was unable to put weight on his right leg. To that point Legas had thrown for just 34 yards on 7-of-12 passing. The junior had been successful running the ball, gaining 61 yards on the ground in just eight carries after adjusting for yards lost on sacks. (AP Photo/Sam Hodde) DALLAS – A four-possession stretch, spanning the first and second quarters, largely decided Utah State’s fate in a 38-10 loss to Memphis in the First Responder Bowl on Tuesday. Starting with 6:19 left in the first quarter, Memphis went on four straight scoring drives, including three consecutive touchdown marches, to go up 24-3 at halftime. Utah State had no response in that time for Memphis’ offense and its quarterback Seth Henigan, who threw for 175 yards and three touchdowns in the first two quarters alone. “We had a terrible second quarter and couldn’t overcome it,” Utah State head coach Blake Anderson said, adding that the Aggies “physically did not match up well against (Memphis). Did not play our best ball. Both teams come into the game with identical records of 6-6, though each team took different routes to get there. USU started the season 1-4 while Memphis went 4-1 through five games. The Aggies won five of their last seven games to become bowl eligible while the Tigers squandered its start by losing five of their last seven games. Vassell, Johnson help Spurs hold on to beat Jazz, 126-122 – Cache Valley Daily

(AP Photo/Darren Abate) SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Devin Vassell had 24 points, Keldon Johnson added 21 points and the San Antonio Spurs fended off the Utah Jazz in the final minutes for a 126-122 victory Monday night. “We just stayed together. We persevered and came out on top,” Johnson said. “I feel like they are a good team and good teams make runs. We withstood that run and won the game.” The Spurs led 121-110 with 2 1/2 minutes remaining. The Jazz scored seven points in 33 seconds, but they could not complete the rally. Jakob Poeltl added 16 points for San Antonio. Lauri Markkanen had 32 points and Jordan Clarkson added 25 points for Utah, which had won two straight. Clarkson’s 3-pointer pulled Utah within 123-120 with 30.1 seconds remaining but Tre Jones tossed in a floater 23 seconds later as San Antonio snapped a two-game skid. “I think we came into this year knowing we were going to be in a lot of close games,” Jazz coach Will Hardy said.
