Special teams, defense pushes Aggies to 27-10 victory over Lobos – Cache Valley Daily

LOGAN – If ever there were a game that exemplifies how special teams wins/loses games, Utah State’s 27-10 win over New Mexico on Saturday at Merlin Olsen Field is the game. The Aggies ran two fake kick plays – one in field goal formation the other on a punt – and recovered a muffed punt along with some other top-shelf special teams plays. Of the Aggies’ 27 points, 17 can be directly tied to special teams plays either made by the Aggies or mistakes in the third phase by the Lobos. “Do what you’ve got to. Whatever bullet you’ve got,” USU head coach Blake Anderson said. “With the weather like it was going to be today. With as many guys out, as many young guys playing we felt like we needed every possible opportunity to try to steal a possession here or there. Turns out it was what we needed.” On the very first play of the game (the real first play of the game, the kickoff) Elliott Nimrod booted the ball five yards deep in the end zone. New Mexico’s returner, Luke Wysong, caught the ball and stood for a moment, was prompted by his teammate to kneel, and

(AP Photo/Marcio Jose Sanchez) LOS ANGELES (AP) — Lauri Markkanen had 27 points and 12 rebounds, Jordan Clarkson added 20 points, and the Utah Jazz continued their remarkable start to the season with a 130-116 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday night. Kelly Olynyk had 18 points and Mike Conley added 15 points and 10 assists for the first-place Jazz, who are off to a 7-3 start to a year in which they were widely expected to struggle. Utah blew most of a big lead in the third quarter, but surged to victory down the stretch while getting at least seven points from eight players. “Again, it’s a night where we had a lot of different guys contribute at a lot of different times in the game,” first-year Jazz coach Will Hardy said. “It’s just another testament to the group, and to doing it as a group.” Russell Westbrook had 26 points and six assists in another strong performance in a reserve role for the Lakers, who

Wings – Cache Valley Daily

Sean Bairstow drives to the basket. Photo by Tina Lerohl LOGAN – This is part two of a three-part series previewing the Utah State men’s basketball position groups. The first part took a magnifying glass to the Aggie guards, this one will open the book on the wings of the team. As explained in part one, finding a true dividing line between what is a “guard” and “wing” is not really worth the effort. So the arbitrary line chosen was that guards are those listed as a guard and are listed as being under 6-foot-3. The wings group will consist of the remaining players listed at guard (this time all the 6-4 and taller ones) along with the forwards of the team. RJ Eytle-Rock (6-4, 5th-year Sr.) 2021-22 Averages: 24.1 minutes (31 games, 30 starts) | 7.8 points | 2.3 rebounds | 1.9 assists | 0.5 steals | 0.1 blocks 2021-22 Shooting Splits: 41.1 FG% | 34.4 3PT% | 81.0 FT% After averaging 14.3 points per game his final season at UMBC, Eytle-Rock struggled to find a similar level of success when he followed Ryan Odom to Utah State. His shooting percentages dropped (59.1 True Shooting % to 53.7) and his scoring
