Jazz edge short-handed Grizzlies 124-123 – Cache Valley Daily

Utah Jazz forward Lauri Markkanen (23) dunks against Memphis Grizzlies center Steven Adams (4) during the second half of an NBA basketball game Saturday, Oct. 29, 2022, in Salt Lake City. (AP Photo/Rick Bowmer) SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Lauri Markkanen and Kelly Olynyk each scored 23 points, including a pair of late 3-pointers, to lift the Utah Jazz to a 124-123 win over the Memphis Grizzlies, who were playing without Ja Morant. On their final possession, the Jazz were leading 124-123 and nearly lost the ball twice but it bounced to Markkanen near the basket and he missed a contested layup. The Grizzlies got the rebound and after a timeout, Olynyk knocked the ball of out-of-bounds. On the ensuing play, Bane got a pass but slipped and fell beyond the 3-point line as the clock expired. Jordan Clarkson scored 21 points and Colin Sexton had 19 points in his first start of the season for Utah (5-2). Both teams shot better than 50% and the final minutes saw big baskets back and forth, one after another. After Bane pushed the Memphis lead to 118-113, Markkannen hit a 3, Olynyk made a layup and a 3, and then Beasley sank

Hyland hits 7 3-pointers, Nuggets top Jazz 117-101 – Cache Valley Daily

DENVER (AP) — Bones Hyland made seven 3-pointers and scored 26 points, DeAndre Jordan hit a rare 3, and the Denver Nuggets beat the Utah Jazz 117-101 on Friday night. Michael Porter Jr. added 22 points and 13 rebounds and Nikola Jokic had 12 points, 10 rebounds and six assists while shooting just 3 of 10 from the field for the Nuggets, who were blown out in their season opener against the surprising Jazz. Denver was 17 for 37 on 3-pointers, none as surprising as Jordan’s heave from the left wing late in the third quarter. Hyland drew a double team and fed the 6-foot-11 Jordan with the shot clock running down. The lefty calmly swished the 27-footer at the buzzer, then mimicked teammate Jamal Murray’s “Blue Arrow” bow-and-arrow shot to the sky as the crowd roared. The 34-year-old Jordan had been 1 for 12 in his career on 3s in 984 previous NBA games, with the lone make coming with the Los Angeles Clippers in the 2014-15 season. Jordan finished with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Nuggets coach Michael Malone hopes it’s the last 3 Jordan shoots. “I told him, ‘Let’s stay at 100% from 3 all season long,’”

USU women’s basketball struggles with shooting, but stout on defense in exhibition win – Cache Valley Daily

LOGAN – The result in exhibition games like Friday’s contest between Utah State and Fort Lewis is usually never in doubt. And nothing was amiss this time out as the Aggies won 74-45. The question was how would the almost-entirely new USU squad look in its first real action of the 2022-23 season. For third-year head coach Kayla Ard, the answer was that her team played “33 minutes of good basketball.” “We got a little lazy there at the end, or tired maybe,” Ard said. “But I’m really proud of the effort that we put out. I love our defensive effort. That’s been a huge focus for us so really, really pleased with that.” Fort Lewis made just two of its first 16 field goal attempts and didn’t make a 3-pointer until the final minute of the third quarter. Overall, the Skyhawks were 16-of-53 from the field (30.2 percent) and 3-of-15-from three (20.0 percent). An exhibition game like this – effectively a glorified scrimmage – was especially important to a team like Utah State where 12 of the 14 players are newcomers and virtually no one has played real minutes together. Ard said she thought the chemistry for this first game
