Final RPI rankings and playoff pairings set for 4A girls soccer – Cache Valley Daily

Photo by Robert K. Scott HYRUM – The final RPI rankings from the Utah High School Activities Association for 4A girls soccer have been released and we now know the playoff pairings for Region 11 girls soccer. The Mountain Crest Mustangs (14-3) finished Region 11 play undefeated and were rewarded as the #1 seed in the upcoming 4A girls soccer tournament. With the top ranking, the Mustangs receive a first round bye and await the winner of #9 Logan (4-13) at #8 Crimson Cliffs (8-9) on Wednesday, Oct. 12th. That game is tentatively scheduled for a 4 p.m. start. Mountain Crest will host the winner on Saturday, Oct. 15th at 1 p.m. The Ridgeline Riverhawks, like Mountain Crest, finished with a 14-3 record. But two of those losses came at the hands of the Mustangs. Ridgeline finishes as the #2 seed in the tournament and, also like Mountain Crest, awaits the winner of a Wednesday game that involves a fellow Region 11 foe. #7 Sky View (8-8) hosts #10 Dixie (4-13) on Wednesday at 4 p.m. The winner travels to Millville Saturday to take on Ridgeline at 1 p.m. Green Canyon (11-6) finished the regular season ranked 4th and will

Legas, Cobbs, Tyler emerging as stars – Cache Valley Daily

LOGAN – Utah State claimed victory on the gridiron for the first time in 42 days on Saturday with its defeat of Air Force. The Aggies finally overcame shortcomings, eliminated mistakes, and played winning football when winning mattered most. Aside from the story of victory, these are a few notes and trends from Saturday’s contest. Legas great all-around It’d be hard to say at this point that the insertion of Cooper Legas into the starting quarterback spot and Utah State’s offensive renaissance is completely coincidental. The offense has gone from a sputtering, turnover-laden mess to a solidly efficient unit. You can’t pin all of this recent success on Legas, given that the Bonner-led offense began the resurgence in yards production against UNLV (419 yards in that game, which is more than the 414 USU gained in the win over Air Force). But Legas hasn’t been a bystander in all of this. He’s helped drive the improvements that led Utah State to break the losing skid. In two starts Legas has completed 68.5 percent of his passes and tallied 531 total yards (403 passing, 128 rushing) and six total touchdowns (four passing, two rushing). Bonner, in his post-injury state, completed only

(AP Photo/Rick Bowmer) SANDY, Utah (AP) — Jefferson Savarino scored early and Real Salt Lake went on to secure a spot in the MLS playoffs with a 3-1 victory over the Portland Timbers on Sunday. Rubio Mendez and Bode Hidalgo also scored for Salt Lake (12-11-11), which had not won a match since Aug. 31. RSL had just three victories in its last 16 games. The Timbers (11-10-13), rocked by scandal in the past week, needed a victory or draw over Salt Lake to make the playoffs. With the loss, Portland was eliminated. The Timbers share ownership with the Portland Thorns of the National Women’s Soccer League. Earlier this week, an investigation was released that detailed misconduct in the NWSL. The investigation looked at sexual coercion and harassment allegations leveled at a former Thorns coach. In the fallout, the club fired a pair of executives on Wednesday. Savarino scored in the 19th minute and Mendez added another in the 49th. RSL, which dominated the match, got one more goal from Hidalgo in

Observations from USU basketball’s Blue/White scrimmage – Cache Valley Daily

LOGAN – Utah State basketball held its annual Blue/White scrimmage in front of a solid crowd of fans and displayed a level of energy befitting a team with a lot of athletes eager to play and prove themselves. For fans, Friday’s two-hour scrimmage was the first — and only — look they’ll get at this year’s squad before the season-opener against Utah Valley on Nov. 7. The Aggies won’t play the usual scrimmage against a non-Division I school as they have nearly every year in recent history. The team will play two closed scrimmages in the coming weeks. Per Jeff Goodman, those scrimmages will be against Washington on Oct. 15 and California on Oct. 22. Both will take place on the road. In Friday’s scrimmage, there was a final score (64-58 in favor of the White team) but ultimately that’s not the main takeaway. Players switched teams and the winner isn’t important other than for individual competitiveness. For us, there’s plenty more beyond the score to discuss. Two notable absences Two projected starters for Utah State – guard Rylan Jones and incoming transfer forward Taylor Funk – did not participate in the scrimmage due to injuries. Funk wore a boot
