LOGAN – For his performance in the second week of Region 11 games, Bear River running back Tydon Jones has been selected as the Cache Valley Media Group Region 11 Player of the Week.
The Bears were coming off a tough 43-14 loss to Green Canyon on Sept. 9 and were then tasked with going to Logan for a chance to end a three-game losing streak. Jones, who had rushed for just 54 yards in his previous two games combined, exploded for 199 rushing yards and two touchdowns. The sophomore’s performance drove Bear River to its first win since Aug. 19 and evened the team’s region record to 1-1.
The two other nominees for this week were Sky View running back Brevin Egbert and Mountain Crest running back Dontay McMurtrey. Egbert rushed for 178 yards and two touchdowns, with big runs of 56 and 68 yards. McMurtrey led Mountain Crest to its first win since Aug. 19 and scored a game-icing 13-yard touchdown run with just over three minutes left in MC’s 14-0 victory against Green Canyon.
Candidates for the Player of the Week award were nominated by Cache Valley Media Group broadcast crews at the respective games this week and then voted on by all high school broadcast crew members, including “Hurricane” John Newbold, Rex Davis, Jason Walker, Josh Anderson, Craig Hislop, John Russell, Clint Payne, JarDee Nessen, Dave Simmons, “The Patriot” Nick Zollinger, Jake Ellis, John Olsen and Eric Frandsen.
