Rooney debuts 15-year-old in D.C.’s draw at Real Salt Lake – Cache Valley Daily

SANDY, Utah (AP) — Matai Akinmboni became the third-youngest player in Major League Soccer history in D.C. United’s 0-0 draw against Real Salt Lake on Saturday night. D.C. United coach Wayne Rooney started Akinmboni at 15 years, 328 days. The only younger players in MLS have been D.C.’s Freddy Adu (14 years, 334 days on April 3, 2004) and Vancouver’s Alphonso Davies (15 years, 327 days of July 16, 2016). Zac MacMath made three saves for Real Salt Lake and David Ochoa had seven saves for D.C., which has the fewest points in the league and has been eliminated from playoff contention. RSL (11-9-10) had a 16-8 advantage in shots over United (7-17-6), with eight shots on goal to three. RSL next plays on Wednesday against Austin on the road, and United will visit Sporting Kansas City on Tuesday. MILLVILLE – The Ridgeline Riverhawks lead all Region 11 teams in the first RPI release of the season from the Utah High School Activities Association, which is especially notable after the team made a change at quarterback earlier this year and lost its top receiver in week 3. Other Region 11 teams continue to appear high on other RPI lists, including Sky View and Green Canyon in volleyball (ranked 1st and 2nd, respectively); and, Mountain Crest, Green Canyon and Ridgeline are on top in girls soccer (ranked 1st, 2nd and 3rd, respectively). Breaking down the state of USU with film and stats – Cache Valley Daily

LOGAN – Asking why Utah State lost to— not only lost, but was blown out by — Weber State is akin to trying to solve the “problem of evil.” Short of consulting the divine, you’re probably never going to receive a concrete or satisfactory answer. This is the kind of game that breaks football teams. And with the crowd booing during the game, head coach Blake Anderson clapping back at those booing, the booing fans shooting back at Anderson, and the fans taking shots at each other over those boos, there’s more threatening to break this team apart than just what happened on the field. Nobody is happy with the current arrangement of things. Utah State and its fans expected a title defense season. What everyone’s got is historic losses back-to-back. At the end of the day with this loss, there’s only one thing to do: take a long, hard look in the mirror, harbor no delusions about who and what the team is right now, work together on a solution, set and chase goals with as much energy as possible. So, let’s look at what this team is after three weeks of the 2022 season. One of the things

Wolves’ RB Christiansen awarded Cache Valley Media Group’s High School Player of the Week – Cache Valley Daily

NORTH LOGAN – The inaugural awarding of the Cache Valley Media Group High School Player of the Week goes to Green Canyon senior running back Gavin Christiansen for his performance on Friday, September 9. For the entire season, Green Canyon had scored just two touchdowns and consequently had not only the lowest-scoring output in Region 11 and the 4A classification, but also the least productive offense in all of Utah 11-man high school football. Christiansen changed that in the Wolves’ region opener at Bear River. The senior running back rumbled into the end zone four times on Friday on behalf of the Wolves, scoring TDs in each of the four quarters. All of his touchdowns came on runs of five yards or less. His fourth and final touchdown of the evening – a one-yard run with 9:31 left in the game – took the contest from a one-score game (21-14) to a two-possession game (29-14, GC opting to go for two on that TD). Christiansen carried the ball 24 times in the game for 101 rushing yards. He also added a 12-yard reception, a 27-yard punt return and a 48-yard kick return to give him a total of 188 all-purpose

Utah State volleyball outlasts Utah Valley in gritty 3-2 battle – Cache Valley Daily

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State volleyball extended its home winning streak to 13 in front of a sold-out crowd inside the Wayne Estes Center on Tuesday night. USU (7-2) outlasted in-state foe Utah Valley (5-4) in a gritty five-set battle as the Aggies came away with the 3-2 victory. “It was awesome,” head coach Rob Neilson said. “That’s the loudest the Estes has ever been. The crowd was amazing. This was the first taste of Club Estes. We loved having our fans out. We gave them a barn burner. That was just an absolutely gritty win by our team. They battled. Utah Valley gave us everything that we could handle. That’s a really good team right there. We just battled.” UVU took an early 7-1 lead in set one, but USU refused to go down without a fight. The Aggies slowly chipped away at the Wolverines’ lead until a 5-0 Utah State run trimmed the margin to 14-13. The spurt featured back-to-back kills from junior outside hitter Tatum Stall, a service ace from redshirt sophomore libero Jordi Holdaway and a block from redshirt freshman middle blocker Bella Wooden and senior opposite side hitter Kylee Stokes. Utah State continued to chip away at
