USU overcomes 15 point deficit to defeat New Mexico 90-87 in overtime – Cache Valley Daily

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Aggies have their first conference win of the year after defeating the Lobos in overtime, 90 to 87.    With 1:01 left in overtime, guard Steven Ashworth drove past New Mexico’s Jaelen House to put up an and-one layup to take the lead 86 to 84. Ashworth missed the free throw, but solid Aggie defense led to a shot-clock violation for New Mexico. After a timeout, Ashworth was fouled and this time redeemed himself at the charity stripe, making both shots.    On the ensuing possession, the Lobos were able to cut the lead to one, 88-87, on an and-one layup by guard Jamal Mashburn Jr. With only eight seconds on the clock, the Aggies passed around until guard Sean Bairstow was fouled. The Australian guard nailed two free throws to ice the game as the Lobos missed a fullcourt prayer in the final two seconds.    “They wouldn’t go away. They’re an excellent squad and they’re guys play well together,” head coach Ryan Odom said. “I thought both teams were extremely competitive.”    Utah State came out with the victory, but it did not look good for the Aggies throughout the first half.    Utah

After long break, Aggies prepared to take on New Mexico Lobos – Cache Valley Daily

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Aggies enter The Pit tonight to take on New Mexico in their second game of conference play. Utah State will play for the first time in the new year after two home games were postponed due to COVID-19. “It will be another good challenge for us on the road and I know our guys are excited to get back out there,” Odom said. The postponements have given the Aggies a chance to heal up and practice according to Odom. He mentioned that forward Justin Bean has especially been able to rehab the ankle injury he sustained at Weber State. “It’s been good for us,” Odom said. “Not necessarily the way that you would hope that you would get it, with two home games canceled, but it is what it is.” The contest tonight will be the Aggies’ first game at The Pit since Feb. 29, 2020. “Obviously some historic games have happened there,” Odom said. “We know it’s a tremendous homecourt advantage and one that we’re excited to be able to play in front of.” New Mexico has also seen a shortage of games as of late due to their Dec. 28 matchup against Colorado State

Trojans’ barrage of 3-pointers downs Mustangs – Cache Valley Daily

MORGAN – Morgan’s Alex Fisher was hot from the start and he outscored Mountain Crest 23-20 at half, including swishing a half court buzzer beater. The guard was 6-8 from deep in the first half and started the first quarter with 17 points, finishing with a game high 28. The Trojans were 9-1 coming into the game and had made 54 shots from deep, but buried 13 against Mountain Crest, leading from wire to wire for the 72-40 win. For the third straight game the Mustangs got off to a slow start, finding themselves down 28-7 after the first quarter. Mountain Crest turned the ball over six times in the first and struggled to get their offense going. Preston Lofthouse was in double figures for the eighth time in 10 games and finished with team high 10. Oliver Nethercott had eight points and for the second straight game Karsen Falslev was held scoreless, the Mustangs’ third leading scorer. No other Trojan was in double figures but Fisher led the way. Season leading scorer Nixon Ordyna had seven in the first quarter, but finished with only nine as Miles Croshaw did a good job shutting him down after his hot start.

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah – Utah State’s 26th-ranked gymnastics team opened its 2022 campaign by placing second out of four teams at the third-annual Rio Tinto Best of Utah Meet on Friday night at the Maverik Center. No. 4 Utah won the meet with a 197.100, followed by the Aggies with a 195.875. No. 19 BYU took third with a 195.225, while No. 25 Southern Utah finished fourth with a 195.00. “We had a lot of moving parts coming into this meet,” said fifth-year Utah State head coach Amy Smith. “I could not be more thrilled with what we just did out there. It was incredible. Going into the meet, we just tried to take all of the pressure off of them and told them to control the controllables, which is their attitude and the energy on the floor. “I’m just proud of the team. I’m proud of what they went out there and did. They did what we asked them to do. It wasn’t perfect, but they battled through and kept the energy up. I’m really excited about this year and this team.” Utah State’s score of 195.875 is the highest season-opening score in the history of the program, easily
