Lakers hold off NBA-leading Jazz 127-115 in OT – Cache Valley Daily

Terrill) LOS ANGELES (AP) — Dennis Schröder hit the tying basket to force overtime and finished with 25 points, and the Los Angeles Lakers held off the Utah Jazz 127-115 on Saturday in a game between short-handed teams. Schröder got by Royce O’Neale for a layup with 3 seconds remaining to tie it at 110 and force overtime. The Lakers got outscored 28-16 in the fourth. Andre Drummond added 27 points and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope had 25 points for the Lakers, who blew a 14-point lead in the fourth before outscoring Utah 17-5 in the extra session. The NBA-leading Jazz were without injured starters Donovan Mitchell, Mike Conley and Rudy Gobert. Mitchell will be out at least a week with a sprained right ankle he sustained in a win over Indiana on Friday night. An MRI showed there was no structural damage. Utah State’s offense posts 53-46 win in annual Spring football game – Cache Valley Daily

LOGAN, Utah – In its annual Spring Football Game, held Saturday afternoon on Merlin Olsen Field at Maverik Stadium, Utah State’s offense posted a 53-46 win against the Aggie defense. With a special scoring system in place, the offense got seven points for a touchdown and extra point, three points for a field goal and one punt for a punt inside the 10-yard line. The defense earned seven points for a touchdown, five points for a turnover, three points for forcing a four-and-out with no punt, three points for a traditional three-and-out with a punt, two points for a defensive stop after the initial first down and two points for a safety. Despite a strong start from the Aggie defense, earning stops on each of the first six possessions of the game, the offense got rolling in the second quarter to regain the lead. Bojan Bogdanovic scored 19 points as NBA-leading Utah avenged the Lakers’ 127-115 overtime victory on Saturday night. The Jazz rested Rudy Gobert, Mike Conley Jr. and Derrick Favors in the first game on the second night of a back-to-back set, but all three returned for the rematch at Staples Center. Leading scorer Donovan Mitchell is still out for Utah, while LeBron James and Anthony Davis are still out for Los Angeles. Talen Horton-Tucker scored a career-high 24 points for the Lakers, who dropped to 7-9 without both of their superstars and 14-16 since Davis went down on Valentine’s Day. USU men’s basketball Hall of Famer Shaler Halimon dies at age 76 – Cache Valley Daily

Shaler Halimon LOGAN, Utah – Utah State athletics is saddened by the passing of Shaler Halimon, one of Aggie men’s basketball’s all-time greats and member of the USU Fall of Fame, after being inducted in 2010. Halimon was 76 years old. Shaler Halimon One of the most prolific scorers in Utah State history, Halimon was named a Helms Athletic Foundation All-American during both his junior (1967) and senior (1968) seasons. During his brief two-year career at Utah State, Halimon scored 1,284 points which still ranks 20th all-time in school history. He also recorded two of the three triple-doubles in school history during his career as he had 21 points, 24 rebounds and 10 assists in a 116-88 home win against Evansville on Dec. 11, 1967, and 35 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists in a 96-80 home win against Arizona State on Feb. 10, 1968. Those 24 rebounds against the Purple Aces were a career high for Halimon and still ranks as the fifth-most in school history. Halimon averaged 26.8 points during his senior season and his career scoring average of 25.2 points per game ranks second all-time in school history behind Wayne Estes.
